Top specimen carp angler Roy Russell is the next big name to join Shimano’s ever-expanding team of carp consultants. Roy brings a wealth of knowledge to the table for Shimano, having spent many years working in the industry in a number of sectors - including journalism, sales, product development and more recently fishery management. Roy was also the founder of the ‘Catch them Young’ project, working closely with the local authorities and schools to inspire youngsters to get into the sport.

Roy first started out by fishing canals at an early age, before moving onto the match and club fishing scene. In the past 25-years however, his time has been well and truly taken up with specimen angling, with carp being his primary target. The species has seen him travel all over the country, wetting a line in no fewer than 150 different venues with huge success. In fact, Roy has managed to land 20lb carp from no fewer than 130 different UK venues, with his current UK best tipping the scales at 41lb 4oz.

His current day job now sees him running the extremely popular Baden Hall fishery in Staffordshire, where he not only spends his time maintaining the many lakes on the complex, but also helping out visiting anglers to make sure they get the best out of their session. As well as Shimano, his appointment will also see him working closely with both Dynamite Baits and ACE, where his input will prove invaluable for the development of future products.

Roy had this to say about joining Shimano… “Being asked to join one of the biggest companies in the fishing industry came as quite a shock and a great honour.  I am looking forward to working with all the people I met at the Nottingham headquarters and can’t wait to get my teeth into a few of the exciting projects the company has in store.  I hope I can be a great ambassador for the Shimano brand and like everything in life I commit to; I will give it 110%!”

Shimano’s Marketing Manager Richard Griffiths couldn’t have been more positive about his most recent signing… “We have had an eye on Roy for a while now. He has caught some amazing fish over the years whilst targeting some very tricky waters and has an acute eye when it comes to developing products that anglers really need. He already has some interesting ideas in the pipeline and is the type of person that is easy to approach and will share these with all anglers, whether on the bank or within the media.”
